THE ROADTRIP THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

In early 2023 I was burnt out, lacking creativity and left my commercial photography agent in London. Dramatic, I know! What to do next? The choice was obvious to me. Hit the road in my 30 year old van with the simple goal of surfing my brains out.

Little did I know I’d fall back in love with photography all over again, make incredible friends and decide to move my whole life to Cornwall. This trip changed the whole trajectory of my life and I’m eternally grateful for those experiences. Journey with me through the highs and lows.

I didn’t expect to shoot much on the trip, packing the cameras as a “just in case”. Some days I’d end up making 1000’s of images and absolutely loving it, mixing between digital and film, others I’d simply let my eyes enjoy the moment, choosing to remember life the old fashioned way. Living in the moment as a photographer can be strange, even difficult at times, “to take the picture or not?” but this trip seemed to strike a wonderful balance for me and I soaked it all in and captured some lovely memories.

I was also writing every day and slowly, the creative flame started to burn again. This circuit break in my life; being somewhere new, seeing and soaking in so many different experiences helped me find my voice again. Over those weeks travelling Europe I felt my eagerness and excitement return. My brain kicked back into gear and I recognised the man in the mirror – the one with a decade-long obsession with photography. I was back in the flow state.

The trip ultimately changed the trajectory of my whole life. I moved away from the town I grew up in near London down to Cornwall and with it I’ve gained a new perspective on life. I hold my photography career more lightly now, and love creating images, personally and commercially, more than ever.
